Mike Humphries

Debuting his first release almost 20 years ago with D-Kontrol’s Candyman EP on Frank De Wulf’s Two Thumbs label in 1993, it’s fair to say that since then Mike Humphries has gone on to become one of the major players in global techno with a back catalogue that’s been played by everyone who’s anyone in the scene. Ask any techno dj on the planet worth their salt and they’ll all tell you they’ve have had a Mike Humphries record in their crates on more than one occasion.

Over the years Mike has concentrated heavily on his own original productions but he’s also an in demand remixer reworking the likes of Patrick DSP, Bas Mooy, A.Paul, Diarmaid ‘O Meara, Virgil Enzinger, Concrere DJz, D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Glenn Wilson, Aphrohead (aka Felix Da House Cat), Thomas Krome and many, many more.

Punish Records pushed the sleazy sounds of Techno together with co-founder Glenn Wilson and with the label Red Seal, recording under the name H, he brought the World Downfall series (big hitters on the Fuse presents series for Dave Clarke), 2 Thieves and was responsible for classic releases and legendary live PAs as Cold Dust with long term production partner Jon Nuccle.

He started Black + White records and co-ran the insanely popular Player Records which was the in-house label of Leeds’ most famous techno institution The Orbit, bringing anonymous releases to the Player label that were also remixed by Chicagoans DJ Bam Bam, DJ Urban and Angel Alanis as well as working with legendary producers like Joey Beltram, Adam Beyer, Marco Bailey, Mark Broom & Ben Sims on the Player Remixes label.

Mike left all of these projects behind him at the end of 2003 to concentrate on his most recent project…

Mastertraxx began in 2004 and has since gone on to be one of the world’s premier labels regularly topping the techno charts at stores like Juno. This label project was set up with a clear aim: To focus on a purely underground vibe and he’s signed many artists over the years, most of whom now sound off loud and proud in the techno scene.

In 2008 he brought in hacker and I.T. programming genius Ryan Howard (a.k.a. Dj Infusion) to co-run the label and help move things forward. They took Mastertraxx into the cyber realm, bringing digital releases to a changing world of music media. This was also the starting point for the now infamous Mastertraxx Underground Techno Podcast. Here Mastertraxx can contribute regular sessions from the hottest dj/producers on the planet, to a dedicated techno community via iTunes and across the web.

With Mike at the nerve centre, Mastertraxx moves forward to deliver the cutting edge of the underground to an ever increasing techno audience across the globe, always checking for new artists and focusing purely on the music for the vibe of Mastertraxx.

Mike has performed Dj & Live sets all around the world but even these days it’s not an easy job to get him out of his studio, where he prefers to spend his time making the techno music he loves and knows so well so it’s an honour to have him play again to his home town crowd at the first date of the Mastertraxx 2012 World Tour.
